Passing the Glass

During a stay in Georgia, I witnessed the funeral ceremonies for the deceased Patriarch in the capital, Tbilisi. Afterwards I accompanied a quail hunt in my hometown of Qvareli and took part in an Easter supra. At this traditional feast, the participants elect a Tamada, a master of ceremonies. He presides over the evening, but is also subject to expectations himself and must, for example, prove his ability to keep up with the drinking. The rituals and conversations reflect social structures, values and traditions, the boundaries of the community and hierarchies. In both places, I was particularly preoccupied with the question of how gender roles and emotions are socially coordinated and passed on. I have therefore created a radically edited two-channel installation from the film footage, featuring a variety of visual and narrative references, which runs on a loop.

Passing the Glass, 2026, two-channel video installation, full HD, Sound, 27:17 min.
